Ontario Health has honoured Scarborough Health Network (SHN) for our exceptional patient care in our Nephrology Program and organ and tissue donation for 2022 – 2023! SHN is thrilled to accept these awards as a testament to our continued dedication and improvement in patient and community care.

SHN thanks Trillium Gift of Life (TGLN) and the Ontario Renal Network (ORN), two exceptional facets of Ontario Health’s organization, for these acknowledgments.

Top Performance Award – Ontario Renal Network

The Ontario Renal Network (ORN) has awarded SHN’s Regional Nephrology Program the Top Performance Award for 2022 – 2023 for achieving the highest Vascular Access Wait Time (Priority 3) performance in Ontario.

SHN’s Regional Nephrology Program is the largest in the province, caring for more than 6,000 patients every year. It is one of 26 Regional Multi-Care Kidney Disease clinics (MCKC) in Ontario and one of three regional MCKC programs within the Central East Local Health Integration Network.

The program also hosts hemodialysis units at our General and Centenary hospitals, and three community satellite sites to offer the most convenient option to our patients, while also providing quality care.

With this, the ORN recognizes SHN’s commitment to excellence in care for patients with kidney disease.

“Ensuring an ongoing commitment to providing nephrology patients with high quality care has required the resilience, collaboration and dedication of your front-line staff, physicians and Regional Renal Program leadership,” said Rebecca Cooper, Vice President, Ontario Renal Network & Trillium Gift of Life Network Ontario Health, in her message to our hospital.

“Your program has continued to demonstrate this in spite of ongoing health human resource challenges, financial and inflationary pressures and the continued presence of COVID-19. The ORN greatly values the work of your program in providing patients with excellent kidney care.”

SHN would like to thank leadership, staff, and physicians for their collective efforts in continuing to provide day to day care for nephrology patients.

Hospital Achievement Award – Trillium Gift of Life

TGLN named SHN one of 44 hospitals across the province to be awarded a 2022/23 Trillium Gift of Life Network Hospital Achievement Award.

SHN won the Hospital Achievement Award – Provincial Eligible Approach Rate for meeting or exceeding the eligible approach rate target of 90% set by Ontario Health (TGLN). This award recognizes hospitals for demonstrating leading practices by facilitating a donation discussion with eligible patients/families of patients at end of life.

TGLN and its partners work to ensure that the wishes of potential donors are realized, honouring their selflessness and the legacy they intend to leave behind.

“Scarborough Health Network has made an outstanding contribution to organ and tissue donation in Ontario and we are proud to partner with their exemplary team of healthcare professionals throughout the year to continue this vital work,” said Rebecca Cooper, Vice President, Ontario Renal Network and Trillium Gift of Life Network, Ontario Health.

The decision to end life support is a difficult and sensitive decision for any family. At SHN, a team of medical professionals support patients in their journey, as well as grieving families and loved ones. A critical part of these challenging conversations includes organ donation. SHN is excited and honoured to be doing our part to help those awaiting a new organ. Organ donation is an integral part of quality end-of-life care, and SHN is continuing to lead best practices by compassionately facilitating donation discussions with eligible patients and families at end-of-life.

We’d like to thank our Hospital Donation Physician lead, nurses, respiratory therapists, ICU and ED physicians for their outstanding and tireless efforts in serving our community. Together, we are shaping the future of care across Ontario.
