We have updated our Birchmount Hospital phone lines. When you call through the main line (416-495-2400), you will need to add “7” when dialing an extension.

Chemotherapy

Chemotherapy may be offered as a treatment option for many different types of cancer. Scarborough Health Network (SHN) has dedicated oncology clinics at our Centenary and General hospitals that provide chemotherapy treatment to adult outpatients.

We are here to provide compassionate care and the best possible patient experience. Chemotherapy treatments are prescribed by a cancer specialist, prepared onsite by an oncology pharmacist and administered to the patient by specially trained and certified oncology nurses. The health care team also includes a nurse practitioner, social workers, registered dietitians, and volunteers.

Patients have a consultation with their cancer care specialist prior to treatment at every visit. They also are provided with education and ongoing support

Generally, patients receive their treatment in the outpatient clinic and return home the same day. Treatment is prescribed following the best practice guidelines established by Cancer Care Ontario.

Support Programs

We offer education and support for patients at both of our oncology clinics. At our Centenary clinic, we also provide several formal programs, including education sessions, workshop series, and support groups.

This education program has been developed to support patients and their families as they journey with cancer over the next few months. It is a two-hour session that will guide you on how and where to get answers as you begin to come to terms with your cancer diagnosis. A group of health professionals, including a social worker, nurse practitioner, dietitian, physiotherapist and pharmacist will share helpful tips and hints with you on many different topics — such as physical fitness, diet, drugs and medicine, psychosocial support, and finances.

Our Survive N’ Thrive program is designed to provide support for patients who are close to completing their chemotherapy or radiation treatment at Centenary. The program helps cancer patients move forward with their lives after completing their treatment. It features a series of five interactive workshops focused on the unique physical, psychosocial and practical concerns related to a patient who has completed cancer care treatment.

Look Good Feel Better is a program based on the belief that an improved self-image can help lift women’s spirits and nurture hope, helping them face their illness with greater confidence. The benefits of the program — which was launched in 1992 by the charitable foundation Canadian Cosmetic, Toiletry and Fragrance Association — go well beyond beauty.

Look Good Feel Better is offered the fourth Wednesday of the month in the oncology clinic at Centenary. For more information, call 416-281-7483 or visit the Look Good Feel Better website.

Referrals

Patients are seen on a referral basis. The clinic receives a referral from a patient’s primary care physician or surgeon. To book an appointment in our clinic, please have your physicians fax a referral form to 416-281-7228.
