This is a once-in-a-generation opportunity for health care in Scarborough.
We believe in providing exceptional care that supports better health and helps our patients and their families achieve their best quality of life. We want to transform your health experience.
As a newly-integrated health network, SHN is doing a comprehensive review of all of our clinical services. This clinical services planning review – or CSP – helps us to make sure our health-care services stay strong and accessible for years to come.
Our CSP process follows the Institute of Health Improvement’s triple aim, which looks at improving the 1) patient experience, 2) health of populations, and 3) value for health care delivery — all at the same time.
This review will help us find opportunities for redesign and reinvestment. We are looking for ways to maximize our health care services and grow our programs so that we can provide the highest quality and access to care for Scarborough.
Together, we will reinvent the role of a community hospital and create a truly unified health network that will be a model throughout Canada.

Services Planning
Clinical services planning helps hospital teams decide how they will organize and deliver clinical services.
The single most important reason to go through a CSP process is to improve the quality and safety of health care for our patients. This can include:
-
Grouping clinical specialists, teams, and appropriate equipment, technology, and resources in one location
-
Creating pathways for patients to get care at the right time, in the right place, by the right provider
-
Expanding or creating new programs that would not be possible or sustainable at multiple locations
-
Removing barriers and building processes that allow us to improve our core programs
SHN’s Clinical Services Planning review will be formally launched in 2019, and will take place over 12 to 18 months to complete.

IN REVIEW
SHN’s Women’s and Children’s Program is our first program to go through clinical services planning.
We know how important it is for babies and children to get a strong start in life. That is why we began our hospital services review with the Women’s and Children’s program — which includes obstetrics and paediatric care.
Over several months, a committee of people who know the program best – doctors, midwives, nurses, patients, and families – studied options, consulted with experts and received advice, ideas, and suggestions from hundreds community members about how to provide the best possible care for Scarborough’s women and children.
This very thorough review process was led by the medical team in our Women’s and Children’s program – not SHN administrators.
The review committee recommended that SHN reinvest in our birthing and children’s care at the Centenary and General hospitals.
With this change, SHN will be able to reimagine how we deliver our Women’s and Children’s program. It will allow our team to strengthen their skills and increase their expertise in caring for women with high-risk pregnancies, and newborns and children with complex and specialized needs.
We will be able to set a new standard for high-quality care and patient safety, and deliver exceptional services for patients today and tomorrow.
