Unemployment and Job Security
Unemployment and Job Security is identified as a social determinant of health as it can often cause material and social deprivation. Unemployment is a direct cause of poverty, which frequently leads to psychological stress, anxiety, and poor self-esteem. This can further lead to unhealthy behaviours such as substance abuse. Research in Canada has indicated that decreased job security and income is on the rise, which further causes division between the rich and the poor. Individuals struggling with job insecurity often find work in poor conditions with non-standard hours. Those working in poor conditions often suffer an increased likelihood of stress, injury, and bodily harm.
